The University of Bahrain on Sunday has announced the suspension of all educational activities till further notice following a group of protesters ransacked bloc 20 of the campus and wreak havoc by attacking the large number of pupil including the female students.
The university will take swift action against all students who took part in the clashes to avert any such incidents in the future.
The President, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Janahi, ordered to suspend all classes at both Sakhir and Isa Town campuses till further notice except for teachers, academics and administrative staff who will continue working as usual.
“This decision was painful and difficult, but there was no other way considering the confrontations students, parents and others had as well as substantial damage that took place at the university’s buildings,” said Dr Janahi.
The statement comes in light of student gatherings that took place earlier on Sunday, shouting and chanting slogans that go against University rules and regulations.
“This agitated another group of students, which consequently produced friction between the two groups on a sectarian basis.
University administration as well as security made tremendous efforts to calm down the two groups. To halt the school day it was decided to transport the students to their homes from the campus in Sakhir for the sake of their safety. The university had warned students over the past few weeks to avoid all that could disrupt the school day as well as avoid all means that could cause friction between students who are on campus.
Damage done to the university buildings was inspected and assessed and instructions were given to start the process of fixing all that has been damaged for a speedy return to class for all students. In addition, the university board held an exceptional meeting to assess and the incident. The board unanimously opposes any acts of violence at the campuses and urged the strict implementation of the university’s laws and regulations to keep the situation under control.
