The Information Affairs Authority (IAA) initiated legal proceedings against Bahraini newspaper, Al-Wasat, following compelling evidence of press law violations including forgery and falsification of events.
Al-Wasat Chairman, Farooq Almoayyed, confirmed that editor-in-chief Mansour Al-Jamri had assumed his responsibility for the irregularities reported on Bahrain TV following an extraordinary board meeting. “Dr. Al-Jamri admitted that he had authorized the news to be published, without verifying their sources or credibility”, Almoayyed in a statement told the Bahrain News Agency.
He also announced that the paper’s newly-appointed editor-in-chief, Abidli Al-Abidli, would conduct an investigation into the irregularities. Fellow board member, Fuad Kanoo said that the newspaper would resume publishing and continue its mission, following approval from Information Affairs Authority President Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa.
In a statement to BNA, he said that the new editor-in chief, Abidli Al-Abidli would take all necessary measures to improve practices at the newspaper. He also announced that a new specialized press team would be appointed.
