Bahrain Bar Society (BBS) Chairperson Jamila Ali Salman defended the jurisdiction of the National Safety Courts and rapped the criticism regarding rapid trial of suspects involved in the recent unrest which gripped the Kingdom.
She termed the criticism as baseless as the aim of any court was to ensure justice, an inalienable right of any suspect and not to speed up revenge.
Speaking to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), she said that the trials were in compliance with international conventions which require rapid trial of any detained suspect accused of a criminal act.
Regarding the proclaimed verdicts, she snubbed foreign criticism describing it as an encroachment on independence of the judiciary and interference in the Kingdom’s sovereignty which is a red line never to cross.
“Questioning verdicts is not by criticizing them but should take place through legal means,” she said hailing legal warranties provided for the suspects like the right for defence and solemn trials.
“Allowing local and foreign human rights organizations as well as the press to attend the court hearings is an evidence of transparency,” she added.
