The National Human Rights Organisation (NHRO) has expressed satisfaction over the verdicts issued by the Lower National Safety Court on Thursday in cases related to attempted murder of policemen.
In a statement issued following the court rulings, NHRO stated that acquitting one defendant and sentencing others to prison over criminal acts that happened during the recent unrest in the Kingdom reflected the transparency governing the work of the Lower National Safety court and the fair trial enjoyed by suspects.
It also stressed that transparency and fairness should be guaranteed in all other cases and that defendants should be granted their full right to defend themselves in front of the court, in accordance with Bahraini laws and related international conventions.
The national human rights watchdog also praised the Military Prosecutor General’s decision to release 28 women detainees who have been in custody over involvement in unrest, calling for the need to release other detainees or allow them to stand trial as soon as possible.
