The National Safety Court of Appeals today held a session and heard a number of cases, the BDF General Military Prosecutor announced.
Concerning the case of the murder of two policemen Kashif Ahmed Mandhour and Mohammed Farouq Abdul Samad for which the Lower National Safety Court inflicted the death penalty on four defendants and sentenced three others to life imprisonment, the lawyers of five appellants insisted that their clients were innocent and requested the court to acquit them.
The Military Prosecution, however, demanded that the court reject the appeals and approve the initial verdicts. The verdicts will be issued next May 22.
The court also adjourned the case of appellant Abdulla Mohammed Habib who was given a seven-year imprisonment sentence over charges of attempting to murder a number of police officers and taking part in illegal protests for terrorist ends.
The court will allow the defendant’s defence to present the final pleading next May 25.
Regarding the case of attempting to murder policemen, participating in illegal assemblies for criminal ends and damaging public money, for which the Lower National Safety Court convicted Hamad Yussef Kadhim and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, the Military Prosecution requested the court to revoke the initial verdict and change it with a more severe one- life imprisonment.
The court will allow the two appellants – the convicted and the Military Prosecution- to deliver their final presentations next Wednesday, May 25.
The court also decided to adjourn other similar cases to next week in order to give members of the defence to prepare their final pleadings.
