Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have agreed to promote organ transplants. A team from Salmaniya Medical Complex Yusuf Khalil Almoayyed Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Centre received a Saudi Organ Transplant Centre delegation and discussed activating a GCC organ donation program, particularly clinically brain dead patients.
The Bahraini medical team included SMC Medical Complex Kidney Transplant department chief Dr Soumaya Al-Gharib and Chief Surgeon Dr Hamad Al-Hilou.
Headed by organ transplant medical coordinator Dr Zayed Mohammed Ibrahim, the Saudi delegation also comprised organ transplant administrative coordinator Hassan Al-Khanani.
The two sides discussed activating organ transplant cooperation between both centres for the sake of GCC patients suffering from kidney failure.
Under the scheme, all Bahrain public and private hospitals would be sent a circular urging them to quickly report cases of clinically brain dead patients and psychologically prepare relatives to ensure early organ donation.
Cooperation will also be stepped up to this end with the BDF Hospital and the King Hamad General University Hospital.
The Saudi Organ Transplant Centre will present cash rewards to the relatives of donators and clinically brain dead patients in recognition of their noble humanitarian gestures.
The two delegations also discussed streamlining entry procedures to ensure speedy transportation of donated organs to Dammam, Saudi Arabia, via King Fahd Causeway.
They agreed to facilitate the smooth movement of organ coordinators and facilitate the duties of transplant teams to transport patients by air.
