Al Dur Power Project will generate 1234MW of electricity and 48 million gallons of water per day taking the total power generation capacity of Bahrain to 4000MW, means 27% extra from this year’s peak demand figures, the Minister of Energy revealed on Wednesday.
Dr Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza, who is also Minister of Electricity and Water, on Wednesday opened Gas Delivery System to Al Dur Power Station said that this strategic 13.65 Km pipeline has a capacity of delivering 1 billion cubic feet per day.
Once becomes fully operational by November this year, the Minister added, Al Dur Power project will usher in a new era for industrial development in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Once Al Dur Power Plant will be operational it will meet all power demand of future developments in the surrounding of the Al Dur Power Station.
Dr Mirza said Al Dur Power Project would serve as one of the key initiatives aimed at generating enough power production to meet the Kingdom’s electricity needs for both domestic sectors.
The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister of Energy, Chairman of National Oil and Gas Authority, Chairman of Bapco’s Board, Dr. Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza.
“The project is envisaged as one of the most important and hugest industrial projects being implemented at the moment in the Kingdom to serve the southern area of Bahrain and particularly Al-Dur Power Plant. The ceremony is also in line with Bapco’s strategies aimed to enhance the oil and gas sector and cater for the growing demand for energy in the future,” the Minister added.
Bapco which operates an integrated high pressure natural gas network extending from the farthest southern Bahrain field to all gas consumers extended up to the northern part of Bahrain, and being a government entity, undertook the responsibility and challenge of constructing gas distribution facilities and a total of 13.65 kilometer long 20 inch gas pipeline, in a record time to supply more than one billion cubic feet per day of gas to Al-Dur Power Plant as well as future power stations at the area at a cost of $ 26 million.
Dr. Mirza said the gas pipeline project is in line with the directives of Wise Leadership for implementing projects and initiatives which fulfill the growing demand on energy. He expressed Bapco’s pride in launching this project which as one of the key initiatives which enhance the oil and gas sector, and meet the increasing demand for power supply in future.
The Minister thanked Bapco’s Chief Executive, Faisal Al-Mahroos and project team in Bapco, hailing their dedicated efforts in implementing the project.
