Bahrain Human Rights Coordination Committee delegation led by Human Rights Undersecretary Saeed Mohammed Faihani met with Human Rights Council President Laura Dupuy Lasserre.
The delegation updated the UN official on measures underway to promote the principles of human rights in the aftermath of recent events in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It highlighted the Bahrain’s unprecedented initiative establishing the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI), which features prominent international jurists.
The delegation gave an update on the decision establishing the National Compensation Fund under the sole authority of Human Rights and Social Development Ministry.
The UN official was briefed on Bahraini by-elections, which saw the election of Sawsan Taqawi as the second woman to enter the parliament.
Human Rights Council President Laura Dupuy Lasserre hailed steps being taken in Bahrain, saying that Bahrain was engaged on the right path to consolidate and protect human rights.
He pointed out that the periodic review, scheduled later this year, would be an opportunity for Bahrain to outline its vision and achievements. Human Rights Council President Laura Dupuy Lasserre stressed the importance of the National Consensus Dialogue.
The delegation reaffirmed Bahrain’s resolve on multiparty dialogue, stressing officials’ keenness to open their majalis and reach out to all social components and political associations and pay field visits across the Kingdom.
