The Information Affairs Authority (IAA) strongly condemned any plans to limit access to targeted areas in Bahrain from Wednesday morning (September 21) onward.
Online organizers of the so-called “Blockade Bahrain” are encouraging anti-government demonstrators to use their cars and block main roads and highways around the capital in order to bring the country to a standstill as they did in late February and early March before order was restored in the Kingdom.
Those who engage in this activity will not be acting out of civil disobedience but instead will be breaking the law. Businesses and their employees have the right to go to work and earn a living without being prevented from doing so by vandals and lawbreakers seeking to damage the country’s economy.
The timing of this action to coincide with the bye-elections scheduled for Saturday (September 24) is a key indicator of the nature of many who have opposed all of the government’s initiatives to resolve the crises and allow Bahrain to continue upon its path of reform.
“The effort to undermine Bahrain once again, forcing us under economic siege and sabotaging elections will not tolerate. The choice to boycott elections is a personal one but any attempt to prevent people from being able to reach the polling stations and cast their vote subverts the democratic process,” said Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Mubarak Al-Khalifa, International Media Advisor for the IAA.
Human Rights activists are asking community leaders and citizens to denounce the “Blockade Bahrain” initiative and let elections take place without any further disruption.
