Colonel Dr. Yousif Rashid Flaifil, Prosecutor in the National Safety Courts announced verdicts in an attack that took place at the Al-Khamees Police Station.
Nineteen defendants, including two Saudi Nationals and two Iraqi Nationals, were charged with vandalism, rioting and attempted arson at a police station in Al-Khamees, located in the Northern Governorate. Sixteen of the accused were caught on the spot at the time of the attack with a stockpile of incendiary devices (i.e. Molotov cocktails). Thirteen of those were found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison, while another six defendants were sentenced to terms of one year.
One of the defendants in the case was Zulfiqar Naji; an Iraqi who played for a local football club was 16 at the time of the attack. The law in Bahrain states that people between the ages of 16 and 18 must be tried in court as an adult; however, their youthful age is viewed as a mitigating circumstance and is considered in sentencing. Naji was sentenced to one year in prison.
Members of the Media and Human Rights organizations attended the trials, along with family members of the defendants. The verdicts can be appealed in the Civilian Court of Cassation
