BICI condemned Bahrain protestors’ targeting of the Sunni community because of their loyalty to the leadership or merely because of being Sunni.
The report stressed that Sunni citizens in Bahrain were physically aggressed and had their private properties attacked.
They were also subject to many forms of harassment at schools and temporary check-points run by protestors.
The attacks have created a climate of fear and mistrust fomenting the tension between the Sunni and Shi’ite communities.
Some Sunni individuals were also subject to verbal abuse in public places, work places and educational establishments simply because of their loyalty to the political system and the ruling family in Bahrain, the report stated.
It also pointed out that the Sunni community had been threatened and targeted during the protests and sometimes there had been direct threats to the life and welfare of Sunni individuals by putting distinguished marks on their homes as an act of intimidation.
The commission confirmed testimonies by witnesses, doctors, patients and their families regarding denial of medical care to Sunni patients and deliberate neglect by the Shi’ite medical staff.
The report unveiled the damage caused to public and private properties during the protests last February and March.
However, BICI indicated that it had failed to confirm that cars were vandalized because of sectarian motives. Yet, gathered evidence confirmed the use of sectarian language and threatening words while carrying out the acts of sabotage which asserts the existence of a sectarian motive in some cases at least.
BICI has revealed that in the absence of law and security and when anarchy prevails, unrest becomes inevitable in daily life which has grave repercussions on daily activities.
Neither the Sunni nor the Shi’ite community in Bahrain was immune from the pitfalls of the unrest, the report stated.
