Despite overwhelming odds and at last weekend’s National Racing Festival, the VIVA Racing Team came in second place at the inaugural round of the WGA Supercars championship. The two-man team won first place in the first race of the day, after driver Raed Raffii won pole position and driver Tarek Elgammal achieved 4th place. During the second race, Elgammal came in 4th place again but Raffii, who started the race at second position on the grid, was unfortunately forced to retire after a run-in with another car on the track.
The team’s excellent times, though, meant they gained enough points for an overall second place finish, with first place going to Alba and third to Batelco.
“We are extremely proud of our team both on and off the track, who had to battle uphill odds but still managed to pull off this wonderful result,” said Ulaiyan Al Wetaid, VIVA acting CEO. “Both our drivers are extremely talented and we warmly thank them and their support teams for the effort they put in over the weekend.”
The 2011/2012 WGA Supercars campaign will feature a total of six rounds, with two races per meeting. The next race is on Dec 2nd and 3rd. The calendar will run all the way until April of next year, when the championship finale will be held as part of the official support program of the Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
