Bapco held a successful Major Incident Procedure (MIP) exercise in one of its facilities to test the company’s readiness and procedure to deal with Major incidents. The emergency scenario entailed and assumed that a fire broke out at Tank No. 954 in the Marketing Terminal of Bapco’s Refinery in Sitra. Bapco’s Fire, Health and Safety Department team responded promptly to deal with the incident and extinguish the fire. Part of the exercise is to assume that five staff were injured and sent to hospital, with no fatalities.
“Bapco complied with its MIP procedure to efficiently control the fire with minimum damage. Special thanks go to the Civil Defense and US Navy and other agencies for their help and contribution in controlling the fire,” Faisal Al-Mahroos, Bapco’s Chief Executive, said. He expressed pride in the success of the exercise.
“An MIP is declared when the incident reaches the point of significant impact to Bapco and/or its personnel”, Al-Mahroos, said. “This can include large fires, leaks, or incidents that involve multiple injuries or fatalities.”
“The purpose of the exercise is to test our emergency readiness coupled with our abilities to involve outside agencies that may be required in supporting roles,” he added.
“This exercise required the assistance of the Civil Defence Directorate. We have also invited outside evaluators to witness the exercise and give us their professional feedback. The exercise lasted for 2 hours. There was no impact to the public during this drill,” Al-Mahroos, added
The Chief Executive conveyed the thanks and appreciation of the Minister of Energy, Chairman of National Oil and Gas Authority, and Chairman of Bapco’s Board, Dr. Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza to all parties of the exercise, hailing their dedicated efforts which contributed to achieving its remarkable success.
