The Royal University of Women (RUW) organised the Kathak Dance Show and was organized by a group of students.
The Show was attended by a wide audience including students and guests. As part of their course, students were asked to complete a group project which looks at the role of gender (women) across different art forms, and to examine its social, economic and political implication on the wider community. A group of students choose the topic ‘Gender/Women in Dance’ which was presented through an entertaining live performance of the traditional Indian dance of ‘Kathak’. The dance performance was conducted by a group of dancers from the Indian Institute of Performing Arts in Bahrain.
Kathak, a North Indian classical Dance form, is a dynamic storytelling art form that combines lyrical grace, subtle expressions and meaningful hand gestures with intricate footwork. It is a fusion of Muslim and Hindu cultures with music and poetry. In addition to the dynamic performances, the event also provided the audience with an overview of the Kathak Dance including its origins and the main features of this vibrant traditional dance. It also acknowledged the work of India’s most celebrated dance Guru, Shavana Narayan, and her efforts at enriching the Kathak Dance.
The organizers of this event include Hanan Al Qarooni, Hind Al Dabal, Noora Al Marraj, Sabah Amir, Sawsan Yar, Zahra Al Aali. The students were assisted by Dr. Jameela Al Mukhaimer, Dean of Student Affairs, Shiri Ambilikuttan, Principle and Founder of Indian Institute of Performing Arts, Bahrain and Bushra Sultana, Dance Instructor at Indian Institute of Performing Arts, Bahrain.
