Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasr, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday backed the Kingdom’s of Bahrain’s reforms initiatives aimed at restoring security and stability.
Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasr, addressing a Press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bahrain assured the UNGA support to the Kingdom of Bahrain and praised the initiatives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the establishment of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).
He also lauded the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts in implementing of BICI’s recommendations and assured the Kingdom of Bahrain of UN support as an active member in the organization.
“UN wants to give a fair chance to the regional organisations and players to resolve regional issues including Syria,” responding to a question with regard to possible influence to be exerted by the United Nations on Syria.
“The United Nations is closely watching the developments in the troubled Syria and will be keen to look at the outcome of the Arab League’s monitor mission to Syria,” he added.
“We are, like rest of the world, are watching developments in Syria but the United Nations will be look at the outcome of the Arab League’s Monitor Mission to Syria,” UNGA President explicitly, said.
The Arab League’s Foreign Ministers meeting are set to meet in Cairo on 22nd and 23rd of this month in Cairo where Syria will be the top at the agenda.
“The United Nations awaits the outcome of the ministerial meeting scheduled to be held in Cairo on 23 January 2012 and assessment of the situation in Syria in order to find out if Syria has implemented what had been agreed before deciding on the next step,” he explained.
Nassir, a veteran diplomat, is a firm believer in the mediation and reiterated that the UN would continue to stick to its policy helping the regional organisations in resolving the internal and inter-state issues through mediation, talks and participation of all concerned parties. “In the case of Syria we support the steps taken by Syria and hope that through joint efforts Arab League initiative will yield positive results.
Earlier, Ambassador Nassir held talks with Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and discussed the development in Bahrain and in the greater Middle East.
Shaikh Khalid thanked the United Nations for its supportive stances in favour of the Kingdom of Bahrain and said that during the meeting numerous regional issues were discussed as well as the role of the United Nations in restoring security and stability throughout the world to ensure the welfare of world peoples and praised UNGA’s initiative for activation of mediation as an essential tool to address conflicts and issues of dispute all over the world which could turn violent before giving any chance to mediation or amicable solutions.
To a question, Shaikh Khalid rejected all sorts of threats coming from the Iranian regime he said that Bahrain would continue to maintain and seek better ties with brotherly country Iran.
“The Kingdom of Bahrain has never mentioned anything harmful against Iran, pointing out that the Arabian Gulf region interests the whole world in view of its strategic location.”
The Minister said that the Kingdom of Bahrain is a member of the United Nations and accentuated its compliance with UN resolutions.
Shaikh Khalid hoped to work closely with the UN in order to gain expertise meanwhile the reformation project initiated by His Majesty the King picks up more speed and invited UN projects in this aspect.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister also lauded the role played by the UN under the Presidency of Qatar.
Later, the visiting President of the UNGA held talks with the Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and the Crown Prince and Deputy Commander in Chief of the BDF, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
