In the past one year, close to one thousand on duty police officers have been injured, with some of them seriously including losing limbs and severe burns, as result of attacks by saboteurs with petrol bombs, acid, iron rods and physical beatings, according to a report.
The report stated that 97 cases of injuries to the police officers have been reported in the past two weeks alone since a shia’a cleric called upon his followers to ‘crush police.’
The General Director of Central Governorate Police in a statement confirmed that an attack on police last night resulting in critical injuries to on duty police officers, according to a statement issued by the Information Affairs Authority (IAA).
“The attack happened around 9:00pm when a group of men armed with petrol bombs attacked a police patrol in Sitra,” the statement added.
“The police jeep was damaged and two policemen were seriously injured with severe burns,” the General Director confirmed.
“They were referred to hospital for treatment and are still in critical condition.”
According to the official police arrested several people involved in the attack and referred them to the Public Prosecutor.
Since the beginning of the unrest last year, close to a thousand police officers have been injured in attacks by rioters and vandals, including 97 within a two week period last month after a well-known cleric urged his congregation to rise up and “crush” the police.
