The 39th GCC Foreign Ministers meeting in Doha on Tuesday will discuss and take a united stance on the provocative visit by the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last Wednesday to the Emirati Island Abu Musa, which had been occupied by Iran since 1971, according to a top GCC official.
Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani, the Secretary General of the GCC, on the sidelines of the GCC Ministerial Meeting held in Manama on Sunday, said that the issue of Iran would be taken up at the meeting to be held in Doha on Tuesday.
Talking about the Ministerial Meeting in Bahrain he said the meeting was fruitful as the participants discussed the status of the decision taken by the GCC Heads of States and the status of implementation.
During the meeting, Al Zayani said, the implementation of decisions taken in the past was also discussed and the recommendations of the meeting will be discussed at the GCC Meeting expected to be held in May this year.
“Such meetings are part for the preparation of the GCC Consultative meeting where the Heads of the GCC will consider the all outstanding issues and decisions,” Al Zayani added.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Representatives Council condemned the provocative visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last Wednesday to the Emirati Island Abu Musa, which has been occupied by Iran since 1971, describing the visit as a flagrant violation of the UAE’s sovereignty, the principles of the United Nations Charter and the International Law.
The council described the Iranian move as an attempt to thwart the UAE’s efforts to resolve the issue peacefully, and undermine regional security and stability.
The Representatives Council criticised, in a statement issued today, Iran’s continuous interference in the GCC countries’ affairs in disrespect for territorial sovereignty and independence, declaring its firm support for the UAE’s bid to restore full sovereignty over the occupied islands.
The council called on Iran to take steps to show good intentions towards the Arab League-backed UAE’s initiative to solve the issue peacefully and through direct negotiations or resort to the International Court of Justice to ensure a just and durable solution and enhance friendly and cooperative relations between Iran and the Arab States.
The council also called on the Iranian regime to review its methods and policy when dealing with the GCC countries for the sake and benefit of Islamic countries and people.
The council also voiced the GCC countries’ firm keenness to promote positive relations with all countries in the region so as to maintain regional security and stability.
