Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) hosted an end-of-season awards party in honour of the winners, participants and sponsors of the 2011/2012 WGA Supercars Middle East Championship.
The event was held at Al Riffa Ballroom of InterContinental Regency Hotel in Manama.
BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa attended the event. Western Gulf Advisory (WGA) Founder and Chairman Ahsan Ali Syed were also present, as was Pirelli Tyres Bahrain Director Ali Al Kuwaiti.
Others in attendance were BIC Operations Director Fayez Ramzy Fayez, Championship Manager Sherif Al Mahdy, Sporting Assistant Manager Jassim Ebrahim and several other officials and guests.
Batelco Racing Team was honoured as this season’s Team Champions. Batelco Team Manager Ali Abbas was presented with a glittering trophy on behalf of the victors, who were taking away the first-ever teams title in the history of the WGA Supercars.
ALBA Racing Team was the runners-up, while VIVA Racing Team was third and WGA Racing Team finished fourth.
French driver Alban Varuttii was celebrated as the overall winner of the SC09 Drivers’ Championship. It was his first title in the series and it came on his debut season.
Batelco teammate Ramez Azzam of Canada finished in second while Mohammed Mattar of Batelco ‘B’ Racing Team was third. That completed a clean sweep for the telecommunications giants in the championship’s elite SC09 category.
In the SC06 Drivers’ Championship, Nasser Al Alawi of WGA Racing Team was the winner. Independent racer Christophe Marriot from France was the second-placer.
Apart from the season’s top performers, special accolades were also handed out to sponsors, team officials and supporters of the championship.
The WGA Supercars Middle East Championship was the leading racing category organised by BIC. Western Gulf Advisory (WGA) was the title sponsors, while Pirelli were the official tyre suppliers.
The end-of-season awarding was held a day after the completion of the sixth and final round of racing, which was held on the weekend of April 20-21-22 in support of the 2012 Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
The 2012/2013 season of the WGA Supercars is expected to begin towards the end of this year.
