In line with the Kingdom’s efforts to promote the media to next stage, Information Affairs Authority (IAA) President Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa received a draft Audio-Visual Media Code of Ethics as well as code of media honour.
He met Foundation for Excellence in Management Consulting (FEMC) Chief Executive Officer Nazar Ali Al-Basri who submitted both documents.
The IAA signed an agreement with the Foundation for Excellence in Management Consulting (FEMC) on February 22 to draw up a code of conduct.
The written charter aims at unifying the ethical concepts for performance, dialogue and social media.
Shaikh Fawaz lauded the efforts Foundation for Excellence in Management Consulting (FEMC) to draw up both documents, stressing resolve to step up cooperation with expertise powerhouses as part of plans to overhaul the media sector in Bahrain.
“The code of audio-visual media ethics is part of IAA-led strategic initiatives to upgrade journalists’ professional performance and promote responsible media freedom and commitments to principles and values”, Shaikh Fawaz said.
He stressed the launch of the code as signaling the IAA resolve to promote purposeful, free and honest media to be better able to deal with events and developments and defend national interests, security and stability.
The draft code reflects the pivotal role of the media in backing the reform project led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa- as media freedom represents an integral part of the fledgling democratic life in Bahrain.
The proposed code is also in conformity with the recommendation 1724(B), cited in the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).
The above-mentioned recommendation urged a code of ethics for media and publications to avoid any incitement to hatred, violence and intolerance without encroaching on the internationally protected freedom of expression.
