Bahrain faces immediate challenges of water scarcity and vulnerability to rise in sea levels, in addition, it also faces greater energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources, according to head of UNDP in Bahrain.
Addressing a press conference in cooperation with Bahrain’s Public Commission for Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife and United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Peter Grohmann, Bahrain, said that Bahrain, after the progress it achieved in the Millennium Development Goals and higher scores in Human Development Index, should look for fostering sustainable development goals that put the economic and social development on an environmentally sustainable path.
Grohmann said the challenges that In the latter, Bahrain is already putting notable efforts in addressing sustainability issues with the solar energy park, he added.
“The UN system also plans this year to develop a framework for strategic interventions in the area of environment to build on the outcome of the Rio+20 Conference,” he added.
Rio+20 could be of importance to Bahrain in designing its sustainable development goals, which provide a clear roadmap with measurable goals towards an environmentally friendly development, he added.
Grohmann expressed strong commitment of the UN system in Bahrain to accompany the government in its path to sustainable development. The UN resident coordinator said the the Rio+20 represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform ideas and concepts into clear action for sustainable development. The slogan this year is ‘the future we want’, Grohmann said.
He urged global leaders to build the future the people want, a future made to last, that affords greater prosperity and equitable growth on a healthy planet for present and the future generations.
Dr Iyad Abumoghli said that green economy creates millions of employment opportunities, resulting reduced poverty and hunger. He called it an opportunity for developing nations to achieve faster, development and avoid re-inventing the wheel as also destroying the environment.
