The Government Committee in charge of implementing the proposal of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to establish an Arab Human Rights Tribunal will convene here on Sunday at the Foreign Ministry’s General Court.
Undersecretary for Regional and GCC Affairs at the Foreign Ministry Ambassador Hamad bin Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Amer will chair the first meeting of the panel, including members from the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry, Social Development Ministry, Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission and the Constitutional Court.
The Committee is expected to come up with a number of visions and submit them to the Arab Conference on the Arab Human Rights Tribunal, due to discuss the proposals of experts tasked by the Arab League to devise the charter of the Tribunal.
The proposal to establish a special Arab Tribunal charged with human rights issued was presented by HM the King in November, 2011 during a ceremony in which he received the final report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).
The proposal, widely appreciated across the Arab world, reflects the kingdom’s rich human rights record and landmark achievements, including the establishment of BICI and the National Fund for the Reparation of Victims of the events February and March, 2011.
Bahrain is also praised for the establishment of the Human Rights Authority, honouring of its human rights commitments and keenness to present periodical reports to international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Council, which is a living proof of its constant keenness to consolidate human rights and implement international standards in this regard.
