Forensic experts from London’s Metropolitan Police have arrived in Bahrain to assist local authorities in their investigation of a large bomb-making facility outside Manama, according to Information Affairs Authority (IAA) statement.
The operation was exposed June 14th when police raided two locations in Salmabad and Hamad Town and discovered over five tons of explosives material and equipment for making highly explosive bombs.
In addition to the British forensic team helping to work the case, samples of the materials are likely to be sent to Scotland Yard’s Bomb Data Center in order to trace their source.
In an interview with the BBC’s Frank Gardner, an expert in counter-terrorism said that the bomb factory unearthed by Bahraini authorities was very serious indeed. “This is almost at the level and style of the dissident IRA.”
Bahraini officials said that the level of sophistication of the bomb-making operation suggests foreign involvement and may indicate a connection with Hezbollah.
