Contrack-Nass joint venture completed one million man-hours without any lost time injury (LTI) at the second phase of the US Navy Waterfront Development project in Mina Salman, a major safety milestone.
Nass in a press release said that the US Navy Waterfront Development project was a military construction project that will develop 70 acres on the waterfront at the Mina Salman Port to support US and coalition ships and personnel.
Phase I and II of the project, estimated at $80 million is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2012, and will include utilities infrastructure, a consolidated port operations and harbor patrol facility, personnel barracks, administrative buildings, dining facility and a flyover bridge connecting Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain to the new port facilities
“This significant accomplishment is a testament to our unwavering commitment to health and safety practices,” David Anthony, General Manager for Nass Contracting, said.
The main objective of the health and safety environment department is to keep hazards associated with construction to a minimum,” he said. Such standards are maintained by implementing accredited international standards and adhering to thorough information and training programme applied across all the sites and projects, he added.
“Our success demonstrates the project team’s commitment to the highest standards of occupational health and safety management and our ability to create an environment that is safe for everyone on site,” he added.
This new achievement comes in line with the new safety standards adhered to in toolbox talks, said the company. Such communication, the official said, is designed to provide guidelines for safe operating and maintenance procedures, safety induction meetings conducted as part of OSHAS (Occupational Health and Safety Management system requirements) 18001:2007 standard duly certified by Bureau Veritas and ECITB (Engineering Construction Industry Training Board) guidelines along with health and safety management plans approved by the US Navy Phase II Project.
A joint venture with Contrack International, Nass Contracting has undertaken the US Navy Waterfront Development project that currently employs 330 workers including foremen, supervisors and engineers, said the general manager.
While Phase I of the project included construction of site utility and communication infrastructure which incorporates consolidated utility building and associated utilities, phase II consists of naval special warfare unit special operations facility portion — which includes construction of a multi-storey building.
