A US Congressional Committee hailed the progress achieved by the Government in the Kingdom of Bahrain last year.
The panel cited particularly the implementation of eighteen improvement proposals, out of twenty-six featuring in the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry.
The participants in the hearing session pointed out seven other proposals, being implemented, including the reconstruction of mosques and the reinstatement of 92 per cent of sacked employees.
Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia Congressman Dan Burton addressed the hearing session, accusing the opposition associations of misleading the US public opinion.
He stressed the necessity to gather ample information on violations and protests before proposing policies.
He urged the US leaders and media to monitor the situation in deep insight, not to be misled by those who are adamant on tampering with the truth.
“The subjective concept of unjustified attacks, often used by the media, plays into the hands of one side solely – the opposition in this regard- thus ignoring the causality between actions and reactions at lesser level”, he said.
Congressmen Dan Burton said he visited a policeman whose house was attacked by saboteurs using Molotov bombs, while his family was inside.
“The acts of violence perpetrated by extremists and protestors prompt reaction from the Government”, he said, saying the US uses tear gas to disperse rioters who commit acts of violence.
Congressman Dan Burton briefed the hearing session about his visit to Bahrain University, where he was shown videotapes of students aggressed by other students siding with the opposition.
He pointed out Bahrain’s initiative commissioning former Miami Police chief John Timon to ensure policemen adhere to human rights and cease all violations.
He outlined the initiative of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to engage a fruitful multiparty national dialogue, a step which was rejected by the opposition.
“Violent protests are no viable or sound path to achieve desired change”, Congressman Dan Burton said, reaffirming Bahrain’s status as a long-time strategic ally and partner to the US.
Held at the Rayburn House Office Building, the hearing session was attended by several Congressmen, including Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia Dan Burton, Congressmen Jim Moran, James B. McGovern, Keith Ellison and Lynn Woolsey.
Congressman Dan Burton visited Bahrain last April at the invitation of Bahrain-US Council and got updated on the reality of events in Bahrain.
Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Michael H. Posner, representatives of international and local organizations, public policy officials and journalists attended.
