The Kingdom of Bahrain made qualitative leaps regarding democratic and human rights reform through raising the ceiling of freedom of opinion, expression, assembly and marching and allowing the formation of non-governmental organizations that defend human rights and contribute, along with the state, to the efforts to promote the human rights culture, which will raise social awareness in this regard.
Human Rights Affairs Minister Dr. Salah bin Ali Abdulrahman met with the Thai Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and lauded the solid Bahraini-Thai relations of friendship and cooperation.
He also highlighted the steps to be taken by the Government of Bahrain to follow up on the implementation of UNHRC’s recommendations, citing the establishment of a High Coordination Committee for Human Rights in charge of following up of the implementation process with the concerned sides according to a pre-set schedule.
The Minister also pointed out to the issuance of national legislations that meet UNHRC’s recommendations, including the re-structuring of the National Human Rights Organisation for the aim of enhancing its independence and allowing it to assume its role more effectively, the Child Law and the Labour Law of the private sector, the establishment of the Reparation Fund, the constitutional amendments aiming to broaden popular participation in the decision-making process, the High Coordinating for Committee Human Rights, involving representatives of all national sides concerned with human rights, among other similar laws and resolutions.
The Thai Ambassador to UNHRC congratulated the Kingdom on the approval of its Universal Periodic Review report, asserting his country’s full support for the steps initiated by the kingdom.
He also said that his country understands the latest developments in the kingdom, adding that Thailand backs the kingdom’s candidacy for the membership of the UNHRC’s Advisory Committee.
He also expressed his country’s readiness to provide technical support for the kingdom in the field of human rights.
Dr. Salah bin Ali stressed the importance of enhancing interaction and cooperation in all human rights fields and exchange of expertise in this regard.
Assistant Undersecretary for Follow up and Coordination and Legal Affairs and Agreements Director at the Human Rights Affairs Ministry were present at the meeting.
