Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the steps undertaken by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, lauding the path adopted by the Kingdom in implementing the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).
The UN Chief also welcomed the approval of Bahrain’s Periodic Review Report at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), affirming support for the Kingdom to continue the march of development and reform.
The UN Chief voiced his stance as he met with the Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa on the sidelines of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
Shaikh Khalid outlined Bahrain’s response to the Periodic Review recommendations stressing the Kingdom’s drive to cooperate with the UN human rights watchdog.
He affirmed Bahrain’s resolve to continue promoting human rights, saying that this issue would rank among the Government’s priorities – being a basic cornerstone stipulated in the constitution.
The minister pointed out that the freedom of peaceful expression is guaranteed, stressing the need to commit to the rule of the law and respect of constitutional institutions.
The two sides discussed the agenda of the UN General Assembly session regarding regional and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis and the Mideast peace process.
