The Court of Cassation (High Court of Appeals) has reduced the sentences of a 19 year old and 20 year old Bahraini who have been found guilty of assault in the case of a 21 year old Bahraini. The earlier sentences of 5 years imprisonment were reduced to 2 years for each defendant.
The incident occurred on March 13, 2011 when the university was overrun by an armed mob that terrorized students, faculty and staff, and destroyed property amounting to approximately $1 million. The shocking incident, which took place at the Sakhir campus, was caught on film from a police helicopter and shown as evidence in the trial.
According to reports, the victim a naturalized Bahraini was taken to the roof of a building by a security guard in order to hide him, but another door was unlocked allowing a mob of up to 30 people to attack him until he collapsed. He was clubbed with metal rods and wooden planks, and hit and kicked repeatedly, resulting in a broken hand and nose, back injury and an eight per cent permanent disability in his elbow.
