Interior Minister, Lieutenant-General, Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, who visited to the Northern Governorate on Wednesday, said that the Ministry has taken action against lawbreakers who acted against the Ashura rituals by exploiting the Mattams (community centers) for non-religious purposes.
He was received by the Northern Governor Ali Abdulmohsen Al Asfoor and several officials from the district.
The Minister congratulated the Governor for the royal decree for his new appointment and wished him success. He also commended the efforts of the previous governor Jaffar Hassan Bin Rajab.
The Minister expressed thanks and appreciation to the Governorate’s personnel for their efforts in serving the nation. He affirmed the importance of protecting civil peace and security by reaching out to citizens and working to meet their needs. He also stressed the importance of finding solutions to problems in the Governorate that are within the law.
The Minister hailed the reforms of His Majesty the King that were launched in 2002 and added that the actions of those who engage in chaos and vandalism are contrary to the current set of ongoing reforms. “All members of Bahraini society should support the reforms for a secure, prosperous community that reinforces freedom and democracy,” he said.
The Minister discussed the general security situation in Bahrain and applauded the continued efforts of CID for timely actions to unearth criminal networks and terror crimes, in which a number of suspects have been arrested.
The Minister rejected claims that certain groups were being targeted for religious regions. He said that anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, who engage in criminal behaviour, will be brought to justice.
“Religious freedom is protected by law in Bahrain and the government is committed to the success of the Ashura celebrations. HM the King has clearly shown his support for the occasion by instructing officials to provide a welcoming environment to mark Ashura. In addition, HRH Prime Minister has issued a circular for Ashura holidays and an order for early salary pay for the government sector.
The Minister warned of the danger of exploiting religious occasions to create chaos and promote sectarianism, similar to what happened in Iraq when Shrines and mosques were targeted.
He urged everyone to commit to general order and to reject anything that could disrupt the security and safety of the participants of Ashura activities.
