Culture Minister, Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, has launched Manama: Capital of Arab Tourism 2013 during the opening of Tylos, The Journey Beyond Life in Moscow at the State Museum of Oriental Art. The exhibition is a component of recognizing Bahrain as the Capital of Arab Culture, a year-long series of events starting in January 2012.
The Tylos art exhibition showcases 250 Bahrain National Museum-owned precious artifacts dating back to the period between the 2nd Century BC and the 3rd Century AD. Arab ambassadors to Russia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Bogdanov, archaeologists, journalists and tourism industry representatives attended the press conference opening the exhibition.
Bahrain’s year serving as the culture capital of the Arab world continues tonight with an evening of opera by the legendary Spanish tenor, Placido Domingo. Domingo will perform with sopranos Angel Blue, Micaela Oesta and special guest Ghada Shbeir. The outdoor concert will be held at the Bahrain National Museum with the new National Theatre providing a backdrop.
The year-long Manama Capital of Arab Tourism (2013) will feature four successive quarterly themes Cultural, Sport, Leisure and Green Tourism. The lineup will include exhibitions, forums, workshops, lectures and contests; as well as the Bahrain Fine Arts Expo, Spring of Culture events, Bahrain International Book Fair, the Heritage Exhibition and the Bahrain International Music Festival.
The Ministry will also launch several projects in the coming year as part of the festivities. These include the Tree of Life Visitors Centre, a project on the Hawar Islands, and the re-development of the traditional Manama Suq (market) Bab Al-Bahrain.
