A string of explosions rocked Manama during busy hours on Monday claiming two lives and injuring the third seriously, the law enforcing agencies confirmed.
The bombings killing foreigners shocked the large expatriate community living in Bahrain, once known as one the most peaceful countries in the region.
The explosions are seemed as a reaction to the recently imposed temporary ban on the demonstrations and rallies in the country which have had badly hurt the businesses in Manama and adjoining areas of the country.
The Government guaranteed the freedom of expression but last week warned that the freedom had been exploited by Al Wefaq, a largest segment of so called opposition and warned that the government would not allow such activity.
The General Director of the Capital Governorate Police confirmed that there were five explosions from homemade bombs in Gudaibiya and Adliya on Monday morning. Two expatriates died as a result of the explosions and a third was seriously injured.
The General Director said that an initial investigation has confirmed that an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded when one of the deceased men kicked the device in Gudaibiya. He died on the spot. The second man was injured in an explosion near the Awal Cinema in Manama and was pronounced dead at the hospital. A third explosion in Adliya seriously injured another man who works as a cleaner.
The General Director called upon all residents of Bahrain not to touch strange objects. If a suspicious object is seen, a call to 999 should immediately be made to report the location. “This is the initial information we have at this time,” he said. “As more is learned, the information may change so updates will follow.”
The Public Prosecution has been notified of the explosions and an investigation has been launched to bring those responsible to justice.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the police hotline at 80008008. All calls will be treated as anonymous.
