The performance highlighted excerpts from the works of regional Sufi ‘qissa’ writers Hafiz Barkhurdar, Mian Mohammad Baksh, Waris Shah and a concluding ‘kafi’ from Baba Bulleh Shah. The dance-drama brought to life the travails of Sassi Punnu, Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiban and Heer Ranjha; stories which centre round the principle of water as purifier and water as unifier.
The role of water as an elemental force was emphasized. Water has always remained as a sacred place in the world’s religions. The Sufi poets in particular, celebrate water as a divine gift from the Almighty even as he equates it with the ‘river of life’.
