The Embassy of Pakistan in Bahrain presented a theatrical performance titled “Earth in Water, Water in Earth” with collaboration of Lahore Grammar School, Pakistan at the National Museum Cultural Hall. Shaikha Hind Bint Salman Al Khalifa President of the Mother and children society graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem and Sheikha Hind, in their remarks applauded the friendship between both brotherly countries, and shared traditions and culture. The function was attended by about 500 people from all walks of life including Ambassadors, businessmen, diplomats, prominent Bahrainis, European expatriates and a large number of Pakistani Diaspora. The Performance was presented and prepared under supervision of Professor Navid Shahzad, Academic Advisor and Executive Producer Huma Safdar.
The performance highlighted excerpts from the works of regional Sufi ‘qissa’ writers Hafiz Barkhurdar, Mian Mohammad Baksh, Waris Shah and a concluding ‘kafi’ from Baba Bulleh Shah. The dance-drama brought to life the travails of Sassi Punnu, Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiban and Heer Ranjha; stories which centre round the principle of water as purifier and water as unifier.
The role of water as an elemental force was emphasized. Water has always remained as a sacred place in the world’s religions. The Sufi poets in particular, celebrate water as a divine gift from the Almighty even as he equates it with the ‘river of life’.
The Performing Arts in Pakistan encompass a diverse range of human activities, endeavors and modes of expression. In Pakistan arts has been the most significant form of expression and depiction of rich and diverse culture and the performance highlighted this rich tradition mesmerizing the audience with its quality and imagination.
