In response to the initiative of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Manama Conference for the Establishment of proposed an Arab Human Rights Tribunal began in the Kingdom of Bahrain and continues for two days which explores the creation of an Arab Human Rights Tribunal under the umbrella of the Arab League.
The Conference is chaired by the Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Shaikh Khalid bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, in the presence of the Arab League’s Secretary-General, Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi, with participation of a Committee of Expert Jurists – formed by the Arab League’s Secretary-General and led by Kuwaiti professor Badriyya Al-Awadhi (Ph.D.).
The conference is also attended by a number of leading jurists on human rights and international law from all over the Arab world. The conference convenes in compliance with the Arab League’s Resolution No.: 7489/137 dated 10th March 2012 which welcomed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s initiative to explore the establishing of an Arab Human Rights Tribunal and upon invitation from the General Secretariat, to compile a study on establishing the Tribunal – seeking assistance from Arab jurists, regional and international expertise regarding the establishing of similar tribunals.
The said study will be circulated to member countries to give their remarks thereon.
Monday’s meeting includes four sessions in which the Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Shaikh Khalid bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Khalifa is scheduled to deliver his inaugural speech in addition to the speech of the Arab League’s General Secretary, Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi. Also during the first session, the study regarding the establishing of the Arab Human Rights Tribunal will be submitted for discussion thereof during the second and third sessions besides discussion of the recommendations of Arab jurists.
The second day includes the fourth session regarding the report and recommendations project in addition to the conclusive session during which the report and the relevant recommendations, of the Manama Special Conference for Establishing the Arab Human Rights Tribunal, will be announced.
The initiative of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa emphasizes the establishing of the Arab Human Rights Tribunal emanating from the Kingdom of Bahrain’s keenness on boosting efforts geared to encourage and safeguard human rights in the Arab world emanating the Kingdom’s national tenets and in line with regional and international efforts in this respect.
