The Rotary Club Manama on Sunday launched a major campaign aimed at creating awareness about diabetes among the children, the President of the Club told the 24X7 News.
The Rotary Club Manama, being a fund raiser in support of different charity organisations in Bahrain and abroad, during a weekly luncheon meeting on Sunday announced the hosting of 2013 annual charity 6-A-Side Football tournament. The proceeds of the event will be allocated to the “Reduce Diabetes Amongst Children” programme.
“We want to increase the awareness campaign with greater emphasis on youngsters as they are the future generations,” Robert H JJ Timmers said.
Despite being a treatable disease, Diabetes, which is also known as a silent killer, is accounted for major cause of deaths in the Gulf region.
The Six-A-Side charity tournament will be held on Friday March 1st 2013, from 9am to 14pm, at the Bahrain Rugby and Football Club in Saar, which again generously provide its premises for the event.
The Six-A-Side charity tournament is not only meant for creating awareness but also to steer a precise programme aimed at diagnosing children and providing life-style improvement guidelines, training and therapeutic programmes. “These all initiatives aimed at reducing diabetes amongst youngsters in Bahrain,” Robert explained.
Talking about the proceeds, Robert said Rotary was looking at BD25000 from this year’s charity campaign. “We could have thought of more money but we decided to stick to a manageable event instead,” he added.
“Last year, through various initiatives, Rotary Club Manama, recorded over 4000 students from different 12 schools screened through the utilisation of a Mobile Diabetes Unit. The mobile unit was managed by the Bahrain Diabetes Society in conjunction with Al Kindi Hospital, which provided the necessary human resources support during the visits to the schools, compiling all results into a central database.”
