Bahrain Permanent Representative to the Geneva-based UN Office and international organisations Dr. Yusuf Abdulkarim Bucheeri responded to the joint declaration presented by the Swiss ambassador on behalf of 44 countries.
He criticized the statement which failed to acknowledge Bahrain’s positive human rights initiatives and belittled its achievements.
Dr. Bucheeri reaffirmed Bahrain’s full cooperation with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), stressing in this regard the successful visit undertaken by a UNHRC Technical delegation to the Kingdom last December 2012 to gauge human rights in Bahrain.
“The joint statement ignores the efforts undertaken in Bahrain and defames the true situation of human rights in the Kingdom, stressing particularly continuous improvements involving courts, free of expression and peaceful protests.
Dr. Bucheeri defended the decision to strip a group of citizens from their nationality saying that measure was taken in conformity with Bahrain and international laws to protect the national security.
He welcomed the visit of the UN special rapporteur on torture to Bahrain on May 16-18, in light with Bahrain’s obligations to implement the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council.
The Kingdom of Bahrain has so far approved over 90 per cent of the recommendations set by the UN Human Rights Council following the Kingdom’s periodic review in Geneva.
