The International Labour Organisation (ILO) Board of Directors decided in its meeting, currently held in Geneva, to postpone looking into a complaint lodged against Bahrain during the 100th session of the International Labour Conference, in June 2011, for allegedly transgressing the ILO Convention (111) on discrimination in employment and occupation.
The ILO Board of Directors decided to dispatch a delegate to Bahrain from the organisation’s labour office to meet the three production sides (the government, employers and workers) as part of the implementation of the tripartite agreement signed in March 2012 by the Labour Ministry, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions.
A report on progress in solving pending issues will be submitted to ILO Board of Directors in October 2013 during its 319th session.
The ILO Board of Directors urged the three production sides to work locally, in cooperation with ILO, to carry out the tripartite agreement which was signed in March 2012.
Labour Minister Jamil bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan stressed Bahrain’s commitment to exerting every possible effort to settle the issue and ensure issues related to dismissed workers are solved according to the law and the principles of justice.
He also reiterated the kingdom’s pledge to continue promoting positive cooperation among the three production sides to further boost Bahrain’s international status in protecting the workers and employers’ rights.
Participating delegations in ILO meeting hailed Bahrain’s achievements in tackling the issue of dismissed workers. Fifteen governments demanded, alongside many employers’ delegations, to withdraw the complaint due to Bahrain’s utmost efforts in addressing the issue of dismissed workers.
The delegations of Qatar, the UAE, Lebanon, Sudan, Algeria, Egypt, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Indonesia, Pakistan and Russia also commended utter transparency with which the Bahraini government dealt with the issue as well as cooperation with ILO delegation during its last visit to Bahrain last October.
