The Replacement of Steam Turbo Generators at No.2 Power Plant Project (STG Project) at the Bapco Bahrain Refinery was announced as the National Winner and GCC Winner at the MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2013. The award was received by A Jabbar AKarim Bapco’s General Manager for Major Engineering Projects and by Vaseem Khan, Senior Vice President for Middle East Region for Technip at a MEED hosted ceremony in Abu Dhabi.
MEED, the respected economic weekly publication, in association with Ernst and Young, holds an annual GCC area award program for projects in various industrial categories at the National and GCC level.
Bapco’s winning entry was in the category of Power and Water Desalination Project of the Year. This double award was received through the demonstrated excellence in Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning of the project. This project, part of BAPCO’s Strategic Investment Program, has a significant contribution to the improvement of the reliability and operability of the power generation within the BAPCO Refinery and will result in operating cost savings through lower maintenance and improved thermal efficiency.
The STG Project was completed in early 2013 at an investment cost of $108 million and was engineered by Technip France Abu Dhabi and construction performed by Ramsis Engineering of Bahrain. The safety performance during construction was exemplary with 1.5 million man hours, equivalent to 528 continuous days, without a lost time accident or injury. The generators each of 14 megawatt power capacity are fully operational after having passed their Performance Guarantee Tests by the supplier GE and replaced five existing turbine generators which have been retired after more than 40 years of operational service.
Bapco’s Chairman and Acting Chief Executive Adel Khalil Almoayyed said this was a great achievement and congratulated the project team for this outstanding award. A Jabbar A Karim said the award was a culmination of Bapco’s dedicated efforts aimed at fostering the national development of the Kingdom and a reflection of the national expertise in the planning, implementing, and operating the major projects in the Kingdom. He also said the award was a global recognition of the high quality in Bapco’s projects.
