The leaders and governments should lobby on nuclear disarmament campaign with a goal of achieving Middle East as nuclear arms free region for a better and prospective future, former Canadian Prime Minister says.
The former Canadian Prime Minister Chretien and Co-Chairman of InterAction Council (IAC), on the sidelines of three-day 31st annual plenary meeting of the InterAction Council (IAC) which is being held in Manama Bahrain, told The 24X7 News that concerted efforts were required to make the Middle East region as nuclear free region.
The former Canadian Prime Minister Chretien, who was among the keynote speakers who addressed the IAC’s first ever meeting held at Ritz Carlton Hotel Bahrain, said that nuclear bomb would continue to be a major threat to the very existence of the mankind.
“Canada was in a position to develop nuclear bomb as early as 1945 but it had decided not have nuclear bomb as this device is such a useless creation with a zero possibility of using it then why to acquire it at first place,” Chretien, argued.
Replying to Iran’s ambitions to acquire the nuclear bomb he said no country should have it in the Middle East and Iran is no exception to it by reiterating IAC’s position on nuclear disarmament of the region.
Former Prime Minister of Jordan, Dr Abdel Salam Majali said that Middle East leaders must work hard on nuclear disarmament of the region.
Jean Chrestien also said that the sectarian issue in Bahrain was not unique to this nation. “Every multicultural society in the world has gone through it and Canada is no exception.”
However, it is important to derive home-made solutions,” he added. Differences of opinion are part of a multi-cultural society, he said, and praised the boldness of the Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa is admitting to the existence of issues and the keenness to initiate measures to find a solution to these.
He also lauded the efforts being exerted to address the issues of trough dialogue backed by openness and objectivity of resolving the issues, if existed.
