His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister met Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird, at the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ministry in Ottawa, Canada.
His Royal Highness highlighted the ongoing reform programme of His Majesty the King, based on 2001’s National Action Charter, which seeks to enhance both constitutional institutions and those that support civil society, while also improving both the rule of law and equal opportunities for all.
His Royal Highness expressed Bahrain’s appreciation for Canada’s key role in contributing to the stability of the GCC, and he emphasised the kingdom’s desire to boost relations with Canada across a variety of sectors, while working together to improve regional stability and encourage the universal application of human rights standards. Co-ordination across economic, business, education and training were also discussed.
Both His Royal Highness and Foreign Minister Baird stressed the vital role the private sector had in supporting comprehensive bilateral ties, through the establishment of key projects and by benefiting from official collaboration between the two countries.
In addition, views were exchanged on a range of issues relating to the Middle East and other topics of mutual interest. During his visit to the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ministry, His Royal Highness also oversaw the signing of the Tax Information Exchange Agreement between the governments of Bahrain and Canada.
The agreement allows for the exchange of information related to the management and execution of national tax laws between the two countries, whilst setting out clear guidelines and procedures for the exchange of tax information.
On behalf of the Government of Bahrain, His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs signed the agreement, whilst Foreign Minister Baird signed on behalf of the Canadian government.
His Royal Highness congratulated all parties on the signing of the agreement, expressing his desire to see further economic and investment opportunities realized between Bahrain and Canada. His Royal Highness also attended lunch event in his honour, hosted by Foreign Minister Baird at the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ministry.
