The Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa on behalf of the GCC states sought EU help in thwarting terrorism as a growing threat to both blocs.
“In reaffirming the importance of exerting every effort to counter terrorism, we stress that terrorism is the most serious threat facing the international community, as it has no religion, sect, or homeland, and contradicts all faiths and religions. This has been clearly illustrated by the US Boston Marathon Bombing, the tragic death of a British soldier in London, as well as by the continuous attacks against the security forces in the Kingdom of Bahrain. These are just a few examples of the numerous losses of lives and destruction of properties caused by such terror attacks,” Shaikh Khalid said.
“Therefore, we need, as states, to consolidate and enhance coordination and cooperation with the international community to take counter-measures to thwart the terrorists’ plots and to prevent them on all fronts,” he added.
“These are some of the ideas and concerns that I want to share and deliberate upon with you, so as to draw up proposals and ideas that can add momentum to our relations and be fruitful for the common interest of our countries.
“Today, reciprocal understanding and respect are the basis of cooperation and close ties between our countries and people. I call my brothers and counterparts their Highnesses and Excellencies the Foreign Ministers of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and the European Union to explore new horizons along the path of our historical relations focusing on strengthening and expanding the scope of our mutual economic and commercial relationship and better coordination of our policies and stances towards international and regional issues based on solid and sound grounds, that will achieve the aspirations of our people towards a prosperous future,” Shaikh Khalid added.
