Chief Prosecutor, Head of the Special Investigation Unit, Nawaf Abdullah Hamza, said that during the month of May, the unit received 18 complaints of ill-treatment, adding that the unit opened official investigations concerning them, and started to question the complainants, to find out the truth and define who’s responsible.
In the framework of the completion of investigations in the communications submitted in an earlier period, the Unit listened to the statements of eight witnesses, and questioned seven accused of the members of public security forces in different cases, and also ordered to present three of the complainants to the forensic doctor to detect their injuries, their dates and how they occurred.
The Chief Prosecutor also said that in the framework of following up the health conditions of the convicts and remand, a member of the investigation unit went to the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation and met with a number of convicts including Nabeel Ahmed Rajab and Hassan Ali Mushaima’a, where both were in good health.
The Chief Prosecutor listened to their statements, where they requested to see specific doctors consultants, highlighting that the unit ordered that the two convicts have to see the consultants who were allocated by the unit to follow their health condition, and conduct all the necessary medical examinations in accordance with the regulations and procedures of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation.
It is worth mentioning that the unit has appealed against discrimination in the judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal which ruled with mitigation of punishment against a police officer based on the appeal presented by him, where the penalty was commuted from seven year to six months regarding being charged with beating leading to death.
