Secretary-General of the GCC Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani has lauded Saudi Arabia’s demand to reform the UN Security Council and enable it effectively and practically in order to carry out its duties and responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, according to the UN Charter.
Dr. Al Zayani affirmed the importance of the Saudi request to reform the Security Council’s system and work mechanisms, given its role as the sole legitimate agency responsible for preserving world peace and security, amid the increasing number of conflicts in the world requiring it to resolve them.
He said that the membership of the UN Security Council represented a high honour and a great responsibility for participating directly and effectively in the service of international issues, Saudi Arabia apologised for not accepting it based on its historical responsibilities towards its people, Arab and Islamic nations, as well as towards the peoples aspiring for peace and stability all over the world.
He affirmed that Saudi Arabia’s stance reflected its adherence to international legitimacy and sincere desire to activate the role of the Security Council and those of other UN bodies in order to meet the aspirations of peoples all over the world and make the world more cooperative, secure and stable.
