Al-Wefaq secretary-general has been charged with inciting openly on the denigration of another social sect and spreading lies which may jeopardise national security and subvert public order.
The Public Prosecution summoned Al-Wefaq secretary-general, following a notification from The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Evidence, and leveled the charges against him, before releasing him with the guarantee of his residence and barring him from travelling pending investigation.
Appearing before the Public Prosecution in the presence of two defence lawyers, he was confronted with the evidence corroborating the charges, including a taped copy of the Friday sermon which he delivered on December 27th, 2013.
Al-Wefaq Society Secretary-General also stands accused of falsely ascribing illegal practices to state institutions, Senior Attorney-General Abdulrahman Al-Sayyed announced.
The Friday sermon, which was delivered at Al-Imam Al-Sadiq in Gufool, included false news, lies, defamation of national media and unfounded allegations.
The sectarian-tainted sermon fuelled acts of rioting, violence and sabotage across Bahrain, which left several on-duty policemen injured.
