MANAMA: Chief Prosecutor of the Northern Governorate Hussain Al-Bu Ali said that Public Prosecution has received a communication from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Forensic Evidence saying that some defendants who had received training abroad, have formed a group.
He added that the group engaged in smuggling weapons and explosives which he used in committing acts of terrorism in the Kingdom.
The group has already carried out some bombings and planned more operations during the national celebrations in December 2013 targeting an embassy and important locations in the Kingdom, he said.
The Prosecution carried out its investigations in this regard, and issued orders to arrest the suspects and check their houses. Some of the suspects were found to carry weapons and the field investigations discovered large quantities of weapons and explosive devices.
The Chief Prosecutor added that during the course of the investigations, the Prosecution received a report from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Sciences that one of the fugitives on the police wanted list had planned to receive weapons to use in an act of terror by the group.
Based on the arrest warrant, an ambush was set up to arrest him in the designated place where he would receive weapons.
At the set time, the suspect arrived in a car driven by a masked man who was later identified to have participated in criminal acts.
Upon seeing the police forces, the two suspects sped off, driving into the police servicemen in an attempt to run them over and escape.
Several policemen were injured, prompting other servicemen to fire bullets towards the car in an attempt to immobilize it. The driver was shot in the head and subsequently treated at a hospital, but passed away on January 25.
The incident also resulted in injuries to the other suspect. He has recovered from the injury.
