ISLAMAMBAD: Pakistan is an independent and great Islamic country with an influential international role, according to Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.
Foreign Minister also noted Bahrain’s keenness on stronger relations between Pakistan and the GCC member states.
Foreign Minister was talking about the meeting with his counterpart during HM King’s historic and first visit to Pakistan.
He praised long-standing military cooperation between Bahrain and Pakistan, pointing out HM King’s visit to the headquarters of Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He said that Bahrain and Pakistan want an immediate solution to end bloodshed in Syria.
He added that key regional issues were discussed, including the Syrian crisis and the need to work out a political solution for it to stop bloodshed.
He said other regional issues came also under focus, including mainly relations with Iran and the need to achieve full understanding between Islamic nations especially in the present when many crises are occurring in many parts of the Islamic World.
He described the Bahraini-Pakistani relations as historic and deep-rooted as both countries share a long history of friendship and brotherhood.
Speaking at a press conference held with Transportation Minister and Chief Executive of Bahrain Economic Development Board Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, the Foreign Minister lauded the landmark official visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Pakistan.
He said HM the king’s first official visit to Pakistan has yielded many agreements and memoranda of understanding which will further promote bilateral cooperation in various fields.
He also outlined meetings held by HM the King with the Pakistani President, Prime Minister and senior officials as well as activities held on the sidelines of the visit to boost economic, investment and trade cooperation.
He pointed out Bahrain’s keenness to maintain good relations with its neighbouring countries and the whole world, criticising Iran’s interference in many countries’ domestic affairs.
Concerning the “Muslim Brotherhood”, the minister said the organisation is not looked at as an international one as it may differ from one country to another.
“What happened in Egypt and Yemen is an internal affair. Therefore, the issue concerns the relevant country alone,” he affirmed, adding that Bahrain understands the stance of Saudi Arabia when it named the “Muslim Brotherhood” as a terrorist organisation given the incidents happening there which threaten the kingdom’s national security. He also voiced Bahrain’s full readiness to cooperate with Saudi Arabia in this regard if it asks.
On his part, the Transportation Minister said Pakistan’s power is in the interest of all the GCC countries, pointing out that Bahrain is home to more than 413 financial institutions and foreign banks.
He asserted the possibility to carry out energy, electricity and water projects in Bahrain, adding that both countries discussed cooperation in various fields.
He also underscored the promising investment opportunities in the GCC countries and in Bahrain, in particular, which could benefit Pakistani investors and businessmen.
He took pride in being a member of the Bahraini delegation that accompanied HM the King to Pakistan, pointing out that more than 100,000 Pakistanis are working in Bahrain and contributing enormously to the building of the modern state. He thanked the Pakistani community for their contributions to Bahrain’s growth and prosperity.
“Pakistan is not only a powerful country in the world but also a key strategic partner for the GCC countries with the volume of trade exchange topping around USD 6 billion,” he said, expressing hope more will be done to further enhance cooperation between both sides.
“The Business Forum, which was held yesterday with the participation of more than 70 businessmen and women, was a good opportunity to study joint ventures,” he added.
