MANAMA: The General Director of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science announced on Monday that the investigation into the Eker fire on April 1 that killed one man determined that the fire was caused by the detonation of a bomb that the deceased was in the process of assembling.
He said that witnesses reported hearing a large explosion at the location before the fire broke out. The body was identified through a DNA test as Hussain Ahmed Mohammed Hassan, 21, who had been convicted and sentenced in absentia to more than 42 years in several different terrorism cases.
The General Director said that after the fire was extinguished, another ready-to-use bomb was found and defused at the location. Several other bombs were found, in addition to bomb-making materials and mobile phone detonators linked to wires. The police also confiscated homemade shotguns and ammunition from the location. The case was referred to the public prosecution.
The General Director concluded by reiterating that the deceased had a long criminal record and was convicted in a number of terrorism cases. Among the cases, he was sentenced to life for his role in the death of a policeman and had also been sentenced, in a separate case, to 14 years in jail for attacking a police patrol and for possession of explosives in East Eker
