MANAMA: Arab League, Secretary-General, Dr. Nabeel Al-Arabi, on Sunday said that Arab states were facing enormous challenges on the human rights front. Arab League Secretary General in his opening remarks at the International Conference of Arab Court of Human Rights and applauded the vision of His Majesty King Hamad for his bold initiative.
“The challenges on human rights front don’t condone efforts to address such issues in a dignified and transparent way,” Al Arabi while referring to HM’s initiative said.
Referring to the final draft of Articles of Association for the Arab Court for Human Rights Al Arabi said such should stems out from justice, equality and respect of law paving the way for the good governance and upholding of human rights of all.
“Arab Charter of Human Rights fails to deliver and it won’t deliver unless necessary changes are made,” he said, and hoped that the Arab Court of Human Rights will overcome shortcomings in line with the international commitments of the Arab world on human rights front.
Al Arabi while highlighting the importance of an impartial institution to address the human rights issues said that he wants to see an institution which can uphold the rights for everyone in the Arab world without any discrimination. “There is a need for accountability and legal framework to make any institution work in line with the Arab Human Rights Charter and international standards in this regard,” he added.
“In this part of the world there are many instances of concealing of human rights abuses and through a regional mechanism we can maintain the respect of human rights regardless of position or other considerations,” Arab League’s Secretary General told the audience.
