MANANA: Articles of Association for the establishment of the Arab Human Rights Court are tentatively ready by the year-end, according to a top NIHR official.
“The two-day international conference which concluded today has discussed the draft bylaw in deep insight and issued a number of recommendations”, National Institution of Human Rights (NIHR) President Dr. Abdulaziz Hassan Abul and Secretary-General Dr. Ahmed Farhan, said.
They said that the key points had been discussed thoroughly in the workshops, which were held on the sidelines of the two-day international conference.
(NIHR) Secretary-General Dr. Ahmed Farhan expressed the hope that the planned Arab Human Rights Court would be on par with other successful regional organizations and institutions to meet Arab people’s ambitions.
Addressing a press conference, Dr. Farhan said that no Arab state objected to the establishment of the Arab Human Rights Court.
He stressed the crucial importance of the articles of association which would pave the way for Arab countries which are affiliated with other regional courts. He cited in this regard the North African countries which are full-fledged members of the African Human Rights Court.
The two-day international conference attracted more than 120 national human rights institutions and civil society institutions, in addition to experts and judges representing the European and American Human Rights Courts.
Dr. Farhan said that the establishment of the Arab Human Rights Court could pave the way to help the Arab league reform its different agencies.
NIHR President Dr. Abdulaziz Hassan Abul denied categorically the completion of the articles of associations of the court at the Arab League. Addressing the press conference, he said that copies of draft articles of association had been distributed to the participants during the conference plenary sessions and workshops to be scrutinized and amended. Dr. Farhan said that the conference recommendations would be submitted to Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Nabeel Al-Arabi who will refer them to the Arab countries for more scrutiny.
