MANAMA: The Lower Criminal Court has sentenced a policeman to one month in prison for using excessive force in confronting rioters in Khamis.
The case was one of seven complaints referred last month (June) by the Ombudsman General-Secretariat to the Public Prosecution Special Investigation Unit for inquiry.
“The cases involve alleged torture and maltreatment during arrest”, SIU member Mohammed Al-Haza’a said, citing another case referred by the Northern Governorate on alleged use of excessive force in dealing with rioters.
The probe panel heard 18 witnesses and interrogated 16 suspects while four complainants were referred to the SIU coroner to examine alleged wounds and determine their causes.
Another complainant had also been referred to the SIU psychiatrist to undergo a psychological evaluation.
An agreement has also been signed with the UNDP office in Bahrain to empower the Special Investigation Unit through training and the development of its administrative and technical branches.
