The Southern Governorate’s Acting Chief Prosecutor Nawaf Al-Awadhi said that the Public Prosecution received notification from the Reformation and Rehabilitation Directorate that a convict sentenced to ten years in jail and suffering from viral Hepatitis disease had passed away.
Al Awadhi said that the Public Prosecution promptly moved to the Reformation and Rehabilitation Directorate and conducted the necessary examination of the detention centre and the body of the deceased.
The Prosecution ordered the Public Prosecution forensic doctor to examine the body in order to determine the cause and date of his death and whether there was any criminal suspicion surrounding it, he added.
He said that the preliminary medical report indicated that the death was natural, and that the final report that specifies the cause of the death was being prepared.
The Public Prosecution ordered that the body of the deceased be handed over to his family and allowed his burial.
Witnesses and officials at the centre of detention are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation, he added.
The relevant medical file of the deceased and the final forensic report will also be included in the investigation.
