The number of killed as a truck ploughed into the crowded beach area in Nice reached 73, France turning the French National Day celebrations into national mourning on Thursday evening.
Eyewitnesses accounts confirm that a white truck struck the crowd in Nice while people were celebrating the Bastile Day including the fireworks and many people could not figure out between fireworks and gunfire which was opened by the police to stop the driver to minismise the damage.
The people across the France are still in a shock as the details are emerging from the ongoing operation by the police and the health officials who are trying to clear up the area after the one of the horrific attacks left at least 73 dead and over 100 injured.
The reports suggest that France’s national holiday turned bloody in the southern city of Nice, as a truck crashed into crowds of Bastille Day and some eyewitnesses claimed that as the truck overran hundreds of people the driver came down and opened fire on the crowd with a handgun, the claim yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
Bastille Day is France’s biggest public holiday, celebrating a Parisian mob’s storming of the eponymous royal prison on that date in 1789, kicking off the French Revolution — the founding event of modern France.
